As I drove over the bridge onto Balboa Island on Monday night, I worried a bit about how ominous the clouds were. Cloudy is one thing, overcast is another. I hoped we could avoid rain, which we did.

I met up with Sam and Sandra to shoot "engagement" pictures. Except that they'll be celebrating 25 years of marriage later this year. Sandra emailed me a while back asking if I could photograph them on the 28th of June. Not the 27th, not the 30th, but the 28th. They've been in California with their son looking at potential universities for him, and traveled all the way from Guam to do so. The 28th was the only day they weren't obligated to be somewhere and lucky for me, that Monday evening was open. Sandra had explained to me that they didn't have professional engagement photos when they got married, and she wanted a photo session to document the years of love and experiences they've shared. Sam is an avid tennis player and Sandra is a competitive outrigger paddler. They're wonderfully pleasant, and I enjoyed our time together immensely.

I was thrilled when Sandra told me that they were looking for something unique, not typical studio portraits, and that she wanted to "try a few jumping shots". I'm excited about the images we captured together, and I do believe they're "engagement" photographs- people, engaged with each other; happy to be together, content to just be.

Sam & Sandra, the pleasure was all mine this week. Safe travels to you as you head back home. I hope to be able to come and visit! ;)
