I'm finding myself at a loss for words on this post. I spent 10 wonderful days with my little sister and her family in May, and it suddenly seems too far away. THEY are too far away. I was able to establish relationships on that trip that I've longed for. I was able to stay up late, every night, with Lizzie, doing nothing but being together. I walked Eme to school, I pushed J in the swing, I held Wes, I beat my bro-in-law at a board game (!!!!!). And now, suddenly, it all seems like a dream. The trip I looked forward to for so long, the surprise, it's over and it almost feels as though it never happened.

While I'm unbelievably grateful for free international calling and Skype, I've got to be frank-- it's not good enough. I miss my sister. I miss her husband. I miss her children. And I cried when I edited these photos because I can hear her laugh; I can hear her children singing and talking, and I miss it all more than I can even express.

Perhaps that's one reason I'm so grateful for photography- it reminds me of what was, and keeps the memories of sights and sounds and feelings alive. These photos are as much for me as they are for Elizabeth and her family. I love you, Lizzie. Next summer can't come soon enough. xoxo.
